Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #1) by Maggie Stiefvater | 390 pages/10h 45m | Published August 2009 by Scholastic | Teen fantasy, romance (external image)
Summary:
For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without.
Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human… until the cold makes him shift back again.
Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

Okay, so, initially, I thought this was gonna be some weird, Twilight-ish, hoakey romance. And it is... if Maggie Stiefvater had written Twilight. It took me the whole book to fight off the Twilight vibes, but I just kept remembering that Maggie’s writing is phenomenal (I’ve also just finished The Raven King) and that it’s just NOT TWILIGHT.
Anyway, how I really differentiated this from Twilight is that Grace has her own life and doesn’t let some stupid mythical boy tell her what to do. The romance in this book is definitely obsessive but not oppressive, which is important if you’re gonna write a strange romance. I appreciated how the characters had their own lives and they didn’t “find themselves” after they found their partner. Though there is a lot of physical contact between the couple, I believe they love each other and Maggie didn’t have to make them kiss, but I’m glad she did ;)
I immediately started listening to Linger because I appreciated the ending of Shiver so much. It was vague until the last paragraph. My heart was in pieces and I was fighting tears (at work, mind you).
I honestly didn’t see (and sort of still don’t) how this is a trilogy. I have this feeling that she went into it without the intention to make it a series, but she had bigger ideas and did it anyway, or something. I’m enjoying it, none the less.
So, anyway, I recommend this for fans of Twilight and the like, but also those looking for a different take on werewolves and the teen romance.
